Ag. Director General KSA Col Hillary Kipkosgey welcomed heads of agencies responsible for space matters in member states of the African Development Satellite (AfDevSat) initiative for a 2-day meeting held on 13th and 14th June 2022 in Nairobi.
Col Kipkosgey highlighted Kenya’s commitment to the AfDevSat initiative and added that the nation had assembled a strong technical team to deliver on Kenya’s subsystem in the initiative.
The AfDevSat initiative was announced during the ‘7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development’ (7th TICAD) held in Japan in August 28-30, 2019.
The objective of the initiative is to build and launch a satellite “built for Africa, by Africa” to monitor the effects of climate change in Africa.
The data collected by the satellite will enable African countries study and respond to the adverse effects of climate change such as desertification, drought, famine and unprecedented rise and reduction of water levels of Africa’s lakes and rivers.
Present were Head of Space Agencies from Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan and Kenya.
