2022 Africa Earth Observation Challenge Final Pitching Event at KIW


The Africa Earth Observation (EO) Challenge is a program which comprises of an open innovation challenge, a pitching den and incubation support for founders which seeks to address key blockers to building viable space technology start-ups across the continent. 


The key aspiration of Africa EO Challenge is to enable origination of start-ups and strengthening the viability of solutions to promote the development of African businesses into sustainable companies that are linked to regional markets. The initiative is spearheaded by RIIS with support from implementing partners including Kenya Space Agency which supported the hosting of the pitch event.


The Kenya Space Agency is keen to promote the utilization of Space-derived data to inform decisions and policies in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management and Disaster Management through effective and efficient service delivery and industry coordination.


During the opening ceremony of the pitch on the sidelines of the Kenya Innovation Week  on 8 December 2022 at Sarit Expo Centre, Ag. DG KSA Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey  stated that Earth Observation provides essential and reliable data and information to support agriculture, disaster management, environmental monitoring amongst other applications and some of the applications would be showcased by the finalists during the pitch fest. 


He noted that the Agency has invested significantly in Earth Observation with several projects in collaboration with stakeholders such as Project MIDST (Monitoring Information and Decisions using Space Technologies) which had undertaken pilot projects of forest mapping, monitoring urbanization and currently on-going flood monitoring system. 


Additionally KSA is currently on-boarding the AfriCultuRes project that seeks to address food security in the region. In his conclusion, he indicated that KSA is keen to engage with the private sector, and more especially the startup companies, to develop the nurture and support the growth of the Space Sector in the region.
