KSA and GEOGLAM (Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring) team yesterday held a meeting

KSA and GEOGLAM (Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring) team yesterday held a meeting on the sidelines of the AfriGEO Symposium that was taking place at RCMRD- Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Kasarani, Nairobi. The meeting was to follow up to the East Africa Learning Exchange workshop hosted by GEOGLAM and other stakeholders in March 2024 in Naivasha, Kenya.

The KSA team updated the GEOGLAM team on the on-going work by KSA in support of the Agriculture sector. KSA is currently working on a pilot project with support from Microsoft AI for Good and Clark Centre for Geospatial Analytics (Clark CGA) to generate land use land cover map for the county.

Subsequently, KSA is planning to work with a consortium of three Kenyan Universities (DKUT, JKUAT and TTU) to use the crop maps generated to produce crop type maps for the county using AI model developed by COPERNICUS4GEOGLAM team.

The workflow and products generated from this project will be shared with the Ministry of Agriculture and the County department of Agriculture for their decision support. Ultimately, this will lay the foundation for targeted farmer advisory in future, once the model products have been validated.

The meeting was attended by Gilliams Sven (Program Director) and Esther Makabe (Capacity Development Coordinator) for GEOGLAM, while KSA was represented by Charles Mwangi (Ag. Director, Space Applications and Utilization) and Jacques matara (Ag. Deputy Director, Space Research and Innovation).
