Our mandate is to promote, coordinate and regulate space-related activities to enhance utilization of space technology for national socioeconomic development.

ABOUT US

The Kenya Space Agency was established as a State Corporation under the Kenya Space Agency Order of 2017 (Legal Notice No. 22 of 7th March 2017) as a successor to the National Space Secretariat, which had been established via Gazette Notice No. 5563 of 5th June 2009. The Agency is mandated to promote, coordinate and regulate space-related activities to enhance utilization of space technology for national socioeconomic development. Its role is to develop the space sector, and to provide leadership and advisory in policy, legislation and programmes related to this sector.

This is premised on the country’s in-depth recognition of the significant role that space science, technology and applications as well as space-derived data and information play in enhancing productivity of the economy through supporting policy and decision making in areas such as agriculture, natural resources management and urban planning.

In summary, the key aspects of the Agency’s role include: collaborating with stakeholders to enhance their ability to use space technologies, coordinating public sector involvement, developing local space capabilities and infrastructure, formulating and implementing space policies, fostering international cooperation on space-related matters, establishing a legal and regulatory framework for space activities, and promoting awareness of space technologies and their benefits.

Promoting, coordinating and regulating space-related activities to enhance utilization of space technology for socio-economic development.
