Kenyan Earth Observation(EO) Data Sharing Framework

The Kenya Space Agency(KSA), in partnership with the British High Commission in Kenya, Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability (RIIS), and Viffa Consult, convened key geospatial and space data institutions. These included the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS), Council of Governors (COG), Konza Technopolis, RCMRD- Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), ICT Authority, and Women in Space Kenya.

The meeting aimed to bring together stakeholders to identify areas of collaboration and discuss implementation pathways and governance structures for an effective geospatial data sharing framework across government, private sector, academia, and regional and international partners.

During the event, Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey, Director General of the Kenya Space Agency, emphasized the growing need for structured data sharing systems to unlock the full value of Earth Observation data and enhance its use in national development.

Similarly, Dr. Macdonald George Obudho, Director General of KNBS, underscored the importance of institutional collaboration and highlighted the untapped potential of existing datasets in supporting informed decision-making.

The engagement marked an important step toward strengthening collaboration and coordination in Kenya’s geospatial data ecosystem.
