Dr Philip Osano, PhD

Dr Philip was born in 1976. He holds a PhD degree in Geography from McGill University, Canada, an MSc (Conservation Biology) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a BSc (Environmental Science) from Egerton University in Kenya.
He is a leading scholar on environmental policy, development and international affairs, and has more than 50 publications on diverse research topics, including climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem governance; land use change; pastoral and rangeland management; agricultural policy; water and land management; and integrated environmental planning.
Dr Philip has 20 years of experience in applied research, project coordination, policy analysis and teaching and has worked in more than 20 countries in Africa and in Canada and the United States.
He currently serves in the Board of the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo, Japan, and with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) where he currently serves as the Director for the Africa Centre.
Dr Philip has had consulting assignments with the African Union Commission (AUC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). He is also a Jean Sauvé Fellow in Public Leadership (Canada).
