The Kenya Space Agency (KSA), through its Education and Awareness team, successfully facilitated a STEM symposium at The Salvation Army Kolanya Girls National School. The event, which brought together students from several high schools across Busia County, aimed at creating awareness of careers in space science and technology while inspiring the next generation of innovators and space scientists.
The symposium featured a variety of interactive and educational activities designed to spark curiosity and encourage learning among the students.
Among the highlights of the day were:
• Planetarium Sessions: Students experienced the wonders of the night sky in a mobile planetarium, learning about stars, constellations, and planetary systems in an immersive setting.
• Upstream Space Careers Demonstration: Using a model cubesat, the KSA team introduced students to satellite technology and the opportunities available in satellite design, engineering, and launch operations.
• Downstream Applications: Learners were engaged in discussions about how space data is used in agriculture, climate monitoring, disaster management, and daily navigation.
• Water Rocket Building and Launch Demos: Students participated in hands-on STEM engineering by building and launching water rockets, blending fun with physics.
• Telescope Viewing: Participants had the rare opportunity to observe celestial bodies through a telescope, guided by KSA staff.
• Virtual Reality Experience: Learners were transported into space through immersive VR, simulating missions that expanded their imagination beyond Earth.
The symposium served as a practical expression of KSA’s broader mandate to promote the development of space science and technology in Kenya, creating awareness, building capacity, and inspiring students to pursue careers in the space sector.
