Kenya Space Agency Joins Space Climate Observatory Network, Enhancing Climate Resilience in Africa

On 24 June 2025 during the Living planet symposium at Vienna, Austria, the Director General of the Kenya Space Agency, Brig Hillary Kipkosgey, signed the SCO | Space for Climate Observatory Charter (SCO). The SCO network is a global initiative aimed at leveraging space-based data and technologies to monitor and mitigate the impacts of climate change. This strategic partnership is made possible through collaboration with the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) and the expertise and support of Expertise France under the Data Governance in Africa program.

The SCO network brings together international space agencies, research institutions, and organizations to share knowledge, data, and best practices in Earth observation and climate change research. As a member of the SCO network, KSA will gain access to cutting-edge technologies, expertise, and resources, enabling the agency to enhance the capacity of Kenyan stakeholders to monitor and analyze climate-related phenomena in Kenya and the region.

Key Benefits

-Enhanced climate resilience: By leveraging space-based data and technologies, KSA will be able to provide critical information to policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders, enabling informed decision-making and climate-resilient development.

- Capacity building: The partnership will facilitate knowledge transfer, training, and capacity-building initiatives for Kenyan space sector stakeholders, enhancing their skills in Earth observation, data analysis, and climate change research.

- Regional impact: As a member of the SCO network, KSA will coordinate stakeholders to contribute to regional efforts to address climate change, sharing expertise and best practices with other African countries.

"We are thrilled to join the Space Climate Observatory network, which will enable us to harness the power of space-based data and technologies to address the pressing challenges of climate change in Kenya and beyond. We look forward to collaborating with CNES, Expertise France, and other SCO members to enhance our capacity and contribute to a more climate-resilient future." - Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey, Ag. Director General, Kenya Space Agency.
