Kenya Kicks Off World Space Week 2025 Celebrations in Laikipia


On October 4th, Kenya officially launched its World Space Week 2025 celebrations at Laikipia Airbase Secondary School. The career fair brought together key stakeholders, including the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), RIIS - Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability, Leo Sky Africa, CANSAT KENYA, Young Scientists Kenya, Women in Space Kenya, Nakuja project and the Young Aviators Club Of Africa .

The day’s activities ranged from insightful keynote speeches to hands-on experiences, allowing students to explore the endless possibilities of space careers. Participants engaged in an ideation session where they explored challenges in rocket development and brainstormed innovative solutions using space technologies.The event also included planetarium shows, Telescope viewing and immersive virtual reality experiences, making it a truly memorable occasion.

In another event, the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administrationn International Space Apps Challenge 2025 was hosted at the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (KALRO) Headquarters in Nairobi. The hackathon brought together innovators from universities across Kenya, all united by a common goal — to use space and data technologies to solve challenges in food systems.

Ambassador Philip Thigo, MBS delivered the keynote address, urging the brilliant young developers to remember that technology should simplify complexity, not amplify it, and that empathy for end-users should always guide every design decision.

The events were designed to expose students to key players and innovations within Kenya’s space sector, while also offering mentorship opportunities in space science and technology. It was both inspiring and encouraging to witness the enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the next generation, as well as the unwavering support and guidance from their teachers and school administrators

This event marked the start of a series of activities taking place across the country throughout World Space Week.
