The Ag. Director General of the Kenya Space Agency, Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey hosted the Mayor of Marineland, Florida USA, Angela Tenbroeck. The Mayor who was visiting the country in her capacity as the Lead of Urban Agriculture, Agriculture, Agro Ecology and Land Use Management of the Office of the Mayor of Jacksonville discussed the extensive use of GIS tools in her work in the US for advisory including tracking of Green House Gas emissions, Urban development, Floods early warning system, among others.
The Mayor was accompanied by the Climate Advocates Voces Unidas (CAVU) Director, Teddy Warria, CAVU Technical Advisor, Eng. Felix Kariuki and representatives (Founder and Board Member) of Ohanna Educational Center based in Nairobi. The CAVU team shared the work they are doing on Climate Education and organizing the Climate Innovation Challenge for schools.
The Climate Innovation Challenge seeks to enhance the participation of the younger generation in addressing environmental issues and climate change through their local innovative solutions in the areas of science, engineering, entrepreneurship, and cultural change.
The KSA DG apprised the Mayor and the team on the current initiatives being undertaken by the Agency especially those targeted to schools. He noted that KSA has been implementing the Space Club initiative in the country, which seeks to engage young learners in primary schools to introduce them to disciplines related to Space Science, Space Technology and their related applications.
The Space Club focuses on four thematic areas: Earth Observation; Space Systems Engineering; Space Science and Astronomy; and IT and Robotics. KSA has developed the first edition of Space Club books which are available on the KSA website (ksa.go.ke) and is in the process of developing the second edition. KSA also hosts monthly webinars on the indicated thematic areas.
The DG thanked the Mayor, CAVU and Ohanna Educational Center team for creating time to visit the Agency. He reiterated the fact that KSA was keen to collaborate with institutions working towards the similar goals, more especially in engagement with students on GeoSTEM related programs.
