Malindi, Kenya - Eng. John Tanui, MBS, Principal Secretary for the State Department for ICT & Digital Economy, today visited the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre (LBMSC). Upon arrival, he was received by the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) Director General Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey and ASI-LBMSC Manager Dr. Giancarlo Santilli, who gave a briefing on the LBMSC's activities and operations to the PS.
In his remarks, Eng. Tanui expressed support for the establishment of the Regional Centre for Earth Observation, emphasizing the ICT department's commitment to collaborate with the Kenya Space Agency to maximize its impact, nurture future scientists and engineers, and raise public awareness of the facility’s value.
On his part , Brig. Kipkosgey underscored the importance of the LBMSC, expressing his appreciation for the support and plans shared. He highlighted that a key priority for the Kenya Space Agency is leveraging Earth observation data to address critical national needs such as agriculture, natural resource management, environmental monitoring, land and fiscal planning, and disaster management, identifying Earth observation as a fundamental starting point.
During the Visit, the PS toured key areas of the facility, including the Remote Sensing Centre (Centre for Earth Observation), the Training and Education Centre, the Operations Control Centre, and the Space Museum.
The Agency has been able to leverage the existence of the LBMSC to build human and technical capacity, gain access to space-derived data, and develop both upstream and downstream capabilities through its partnership with the Italian Space Agency.
